Hollywood asks broadband suppliers to stop piracy

The Motion Picture Association of America has asked broadband providers to pull the plug on copyright-infringers who download their movies for free.

Hollywood has suggested that Internet providers should sift through data travelling across their networks to chop transmissions that violate copyright law.

Jim Williams, the MPAA's chief technology officer and senior vice president, has said much of the Internet has been taken over by people dealing in “stolen goods'.

The MPAA is following up on an idea from the major record labels, who some years ago called on Internet providers to block access to Napster type sites.
