Two French aid workers have been kidnapped in Afghanistan.

The pair, who work for the group, Action Against Hunger, were kidnapped as they slept in a guest-house in the town of Nili.

According to a spokesperson for the Paris-based organization, the two aid workers were seized and tied up after gunmen overpowered security guards.

The two expatriates were then bundled into cars and driven away.

Crisis groups have been set up in Kabul and Paris to help win their release, while the French Foreign Ministry has opened diplomatic channels to smooth the process.

So far no one has admitted responsibility for the kidnappings.

In the past, the Taliban have been involved in a series of kidnappings in Afghanistan, but so to have criminal gangs seeking ransom.
