Mr Sad1123, it is the duty of the Muslim Religious Council to advise all Muslims against whatever is not in accordance to the Muslim Religion. It is not for other people like you to contradict or to question the Fatwa issued by the Muslim Religious Council because you are not a Muslim. It is up the Muslims to think and to assess the Fatwa on Yoga. There are so many other forms of light exercise that the Muslims can practice to maintain their health. So they can do away with Yoga. It is as simple as that.

I’m writing here using my real name. I don’t hide behind pseudo or nick names. Why should I?

1. Not long ago the Majlis Fatwa ruled smoking was haram. But it was never enforced. They haven’t prohibited yoga yet, merely considering it after a proposal for its banning was made.

2. I’m a Muslim who have been practising yoga, mixed with Tai Chi, Chi Kong, Latifah, jogging, simple calisthenics, aerobics, weight training, etc. And like a smoker who is banned, I’m not going to stop taking care of my health if yoga is banned. If a team of jais snoop on me practising yoga, I’ll say I’m doing tai chi until they ban tai chi. Then I’ll say chi kong and so on until they ban me sitting on my haunches with my eyes closed for resembling a yoga pose. Then I’ll move on to the kampung form of exercise known as the eastern toilet squat. Hey man this posture or asana is good for your spine, mind and muscle tone of your lower body. Try it. So happen it is also one of the thousands of yoga poses! Yoga is not static but grows by the minute. You can invent a new yoga pose yourself. For example, a new pose I’ve just invented is called sitting up straight while keying in your computer board with flying fingers. Or is that chi kung now! I’m all mixed up.

3. For those who are interested, google these words: “Similarites between Hinduism and Islam” and you’ll see hundreds of thousands of sites. For starters go to one DR ZAKIR NAIK and you’ll begin to appreciate Hindus and Muslims no need to fighty-fighty chicken all the time. Hey last night’s Deepavali national celebration seem to embody this ethos. Instead of calling each other names - bodoh, etc - why not find the common good? Exercise patience and be kind to one another, especially to one who is lesser endowed than you both upstairs and downstairs?

Let me enlighten u with some important info...

Fatwa is only needed when certain issue is NOT mentioned in The Quran or Hadith. Killing is prohibited and a huge sin Islam as stated in Quran so there’s no need for fatwa for killing. And I believe all religion prohibited killing, even though the Hindus are killing the Christian in India but I don’t blame Hindu as a religion, its the follower might be sidetrack.

(1)Can you please tell r u one of the factory owner. Does praying 5 times a day affect ur production line somehow? In Malaysia, the factory doesn’t closed down juz Muslim has to pray. I live in New Zealand but a Malaysian citizen. Even, in here (NZ) factories do not closed juuz bcoz the muslims have to pray?

(2) Or r u one of the administrators of universities therefore it incurs costs for ur universities to get a foot bath. Well, 4 ur information food bath are only available in mosque and in NZ only at Muslim prayers rooms.

I was brought up among people with different becakgrounds and race and now I’m among these 'white people'. I l never have any problems practicing my religion. You know, it is very shocking and sad situation after reading most of the comments here. Come on la guys. We r Malaysians. Y do we have to b mean to each other. If u disagree use proper words and avoid harsh words. I was hoping that this forum could be used to discuss on y Yoga was banned. Those who practiced yoga either muslim or non muslim perhaps could shed some lights of how it was done. And the muslims with Islamic knowledge could discuss the things muslim should not do. U see... there’s no need for harsh languages. So basically ur problems have nothing to do with Malaysian Muslim practicing Yoga. If I’m not mistaken, the number of muslim are growing very rapidly in the world. Praying 5 times a day is one of 5 pillars in Islam. Meaning that, if u do not pray then u cannot claim that u r a muslim. I believe since there r growing number of Muslim so the there growing needs of certain facilities. I’m not really sure what a foot bath is, but I think I can imagine it. Do u know y Muslim need foot bath? When we want to pray, we need to do ablution (cleansing certain parts of the body). One of them is our feet. So, the reason they need to have foot bath is bcoz i don’t think the others wanted the Muslim to put their feet in the sink. Whether u like it or not we will pray bcoz that is what being Muslim (submitting to God) is about. Every religion has their own do’s dont’s. For example, the hindu’s do not eat beef. The most important is how we tolerate each other. Thats how Malaysia was and hopefully still is... Malaysians always tolerate each other including in terms practicing religion. Thats y we have several celebration - Eidul Fitri & Eidul Adha(Muslim & Malay), Chinese New Year (Chinese)& Wesak (Buddhist), Deepavali & Thaipusam (Hindu & Indian). I think regardless of what I say u might still feel the same. But u know in Islam, we were told if there’s an arguments about religion we need to shed some lights on the matter and thats what I’m doing. But if the argument continues bcoz the other person would not accept whats being said, then we should walk away from that arguments. If u r still feeling angry, then that is ur right, but i will not engage in this matter anymore bcoz, (1) it doesn’t concern Malaysia and Malaysians and (2)it is my right to walk away.

I have read through all the postings. I find it strange that so much unnecessary and some even uncouth comments should come from people who don’t really know what the Fatwa is all about. And they are all non-Muslims who think they know more about the Muslim religion than the people in the Muslim Religious Council.The ban on Yoga affects only Muslims and it has to do with Yoga being associated with the Hindu religion. So why should all of you who are non Muslims bother about it. Whereas, I don’t see any stressful comments from Muslims. There is nothing stupid, bodoh, etc,etc,etc, about the Fatwa. 1. I m a muslim girl but I dont agree with the fatwa.
2. I have very strong faith in my religion even though i DONT PREY 5 times a day. BUT THE REST OF MY FAMILY DOES.
3. I LOVE my religion because i think its beautiful. But i DONT like what current religious leader is doing to it.
4. To the fatwa council AND SUPPORTERS . DO UNDERSTAND...Its not just about YOGA ... ITS ABOUT HAVING FATIH IN OUR MUSLIM PEOPLE. This is Y people is up set ... because u dont.
5. By doing yoga DOES NOT make our faith less, but when u dis-trust us, little us... THIS makes our faith less in U. friends...dont confuse the 2 diff things (religion and people).

I have Muslim neighbours from all over the world. They left their home countries ,cause it was so awful to exist.There is a growing population of Malays now in Canada, and they have surpassed the Indians and Chinese from malaysia.My Malay friends tell me they can be whoever they choose to be, a few of my Malay friends, have chosen to be Born again Christians.They have also become Canadian Citizens, and have totally turned their back on Malaysia.

Our worry is when the religious freaks raid our Yoga Studio we will be taken away to the lockup for allowing Muslims to practice Yoga in our studio. Are they telling us to discriminate? To ask every good Malaysian, Kamu orang apa, who are you, are you muslim, Orang Utan atau muslim? That is discrimination. In the West muslims sued many Corporations for discrimination. This is double standard.

Re banning of Yoga for Muslims

It seems very sad when some people on this site, who happen to be Muslim, say that anyone who is not has no right to comment. What ever happened to reasonable discussion and learning and sharing from each other. And what about the many moderate Muslims who think this banning of Yoga is rediculous?

I feel that if someone feels yoga is not good for them and runs against their belief systems, then by all means they can choose not to follow it.The key word being 'choose'. But if someone, Muslim, Christian or of no fixed religion feels that they benefit from Yoga practice, then they should be free to 'choose' to practice it too, without threat of persecution.

It seem to me that if any belief structure, religion, communism etc was really confident about what they believed, there would be no need to morally police people’s minds out of fear that they might start to think for themselves. Surely the world would be a better place if we had freedom of choice and didn’t treat others as though they were lost children or sheep who were incapable of thinking for themselves. What a great way for certain people to stay in power - to ban anyone else from thinking or deviating from their version of their path. If something or someone is really confident, then it/they don’t need to use fear tactics to control.

I have met lovely people in Malaysia, some who are Muslim and who enjoy Yoga. I have one friend who was born in Malaysia into a Muslim family, who does not want to live in Malaysia because she is having a faith forced upon her that is not of her choosing. Personally I do not care what her faith is, as long as she is a good person, which she is. But surely it’s a basic human right that we get to choose what we believe in without fear of jail or threats.

And by the way. Although I am not Muslim, my father is married to a Muslim woman and they have a child who is my brother. And I love both my step mother and my brother very much. So I do have some insight,although limited, into the Muslim world.

I would say exactly the same as what I said above if the fundamentalist Christians tried to ban their practitioners from practicing Yoga (and they do try). I truly believe people need to think for themselves, and unless they do we are in trouble and destined to be sheep.

Surely our faith needs to be strong in our own hearts and minds, from deep inside ourselves - through questioning and even doubting at times, and then coming to our own conclusions. Rather than forced upon us through fear of being persecuted in this life or the next from some outside source. Again - I would say about all belief systems and relgions. And even Yoga. It’s no good someone else telling me which is the best type of Yoga or that I can only practice Yoga in one way. I need to experiment myself and learn what is best for me and my health, heart and mind. I believe it’s this experimentation that has certain religious fundamentalists in a state of fear. If people experiment with themselves they might just start to think for themselves; and maybe what they think won’t be the same as what everyone else thinks. Is this so terrible and to be so feared?

I think that none of us really know what the truth is as far as this Universe is concerned. We all try to know by studying philosophy, religion, yoga etc,and I believe that’s a noble thing to do.we all want to know the 'truth'. But since we can’t really know for sure, it seems insane to abuse or supress others for not believing as we do.

My issue with this ban on Yoga for Muslims in Malaysia, is that it is not coming across like a 'recommendation'. But it is coming as a 'ban'...leaving the people who agree with the ban happy but leaving the Muslim people who have benefited from Yoga and would like to keep practicing it, out in the cold. And I do have Muslim friends who fall into the second category. This is why I write in. It’s because I care what’s happening to them.

On another note, it seems incredibly unhelpful to have rude and vile insults hurled around from Non Muslim and Muslim people alike...this is a space for reasonable discussion not hatred. At least I hope so.

Just leave this matter alone with Muslims brothers and sisters and their councils. hi everyone, i just want to say that i am really impressed at how so many malays and others have responded to this latest fatwa. i am a student in chicago and i grew up christian. america is very intolerant of non christian traditions of worship. in america, it is not uncommon for young whites to make fun of jewish people and arabs and indians and blacks and mexicans and anyone else who is not white. everyone in america is racist. a few people, however, reject this evil nonsense. i was raised christian, but i dislike american expressions of christianity; and instead i explored judaism and islam. later in life i started adapting buddhist and confusionist teachings into my life aswell. i love yoga and i believe god wants human beings to express their best offerings to him; and to serve god and offer god our best we must serve each other and offer one another our best. hindus have a lot to offer the world. hindus have given the world the taj mahal, buddhism, the sitar, ravi shankar, the maharashi maheshma yogi, transcendental meditation, and yoga, to name a few contributions from our indian breathren. without hinduism, the beatles might not have recorded some of their best music including, the white album and revolver. everyone likes the beatles, right? yoga is not decadent or hedonistic like many western vices. fast food and booze and cigarettes are terrible, but yoga is discipline. yoga is the opposite of self indulgent, wicked behavior. islam is a faith that celebrates tolerance and harmony. why do muslims, around the world, allow right-wing clerics to dominate the message of islam? why don’t more mainstream muslims denounce the clerics and the ayatollahs and the jerks who don’t want people to live in peace and harmony. what is wrong with fun? what is wrong with spiritual flexibility? alah, christ, yaweh, vishnu, buddha, etc...all preach the same message. that message is peace and social justice, not religious dogmatism and conservatism. i don’t live in an islamic country, but america has a philosophy of intolerance and religious zealotry too. george bush is an evil, demonic asshole and most elected officials in america are just like him. they pretend to be christians, but christ didn’t make war. war is not a christian tool. anyone who uses war, therefore, cannot be a christian. why can’t we live in a pluralistic world where all people can practice whatever and however they want, so long as their practice causes no harm to others? why does conflict exist between religious groups? conflict is against god. god is love. all the negativity denouncing this and that... all that is wrong. i accept that my country is the source of many of the world’s problems, but you must acknowledge that some of the muslim world’s elected leaders work with this devil! islam should reject america. i reject america. these people may have money, but they have money because their ancestors stole it from indians, africans, and asians. they are morally and spirtually bankrupt and they know nothing of the ways of god. we must be better than this. we must be better than the selfish, competitive nature of american capitalism and what that means for the rest of the world. we must also be, however, better than fear and violent retaliation for the things america causes. when you hurt other malays, you do not hurt the west. most people in america don’t even know malaysia exist. they’re dumb and wealthy. when you hurt other malays, you hurt yourselves. i apologize for the rambling, disconnected nature of my remarks. i am simply overwhelmed with joy at the opportunity to share some of my thoughts with the malaysians people. peace (even if america makes it impossible). on behalf of myself, ryan shelton, i want to apologize for all the terrible things america has done to muslim people in iran, iraq, palestine, afghanistan, and elsewhere in the world of color. as a black man, i am ashamed of america. i have no hope in barack obama and neither should you. his mother is white, not that that makes him evil, but he is not a black man. furthermore, recent remarks about him being a docile “house negro” are appropriate. he is. thanks.

Rakha Islamic Fitness NEW

In the UK there has been a new form of fitness certifed by the CMA called 'Rakha'.

let'us living without politics
