Child murders revealed in remote New Guinea
Brunei News.Net Monday 1st December, 2008
The National newspaper has reported that women in the Eastern Highlands area of New Guinea killed their baby boys to stop breeding males.
The infanticide was perpetrated so long-running tribal fighting could come to a stop.
Many women in the Gimi area the highlands struggled to feed their existing children when men went off to fight, so, for a decade or more, allegedly murdered their infant sons.
The women hoped that their tribe's male stock would be diminished to the point that the adult men would have to withdraw from fighting.
According to The National, the infanticide was revealed during a peace training session in the town of Goroka last week.
Several mothers said they had lost their sons over a 10-year period.
