JAKARTA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's eastern province of Papua on Friday, the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

The earthquake happened at 10:02 a.m. Jakarta time (0302 GMT) with its epicenter situated 29 km southeast of Sarmi Regency on land and a depth of 22 km, the agency reported.

There was not any potential for giant waves caused by the tremors so no tsunami warning was issued by the agency.

Indonesia, an archipelagic nation, has been frequently stricken by earthquakes for its location on a vulnerable quake-jolted area called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
