Indonesia, Australia to further strengthen security cooperation

JAKARTA, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia and Australia are planning to expand their security cooperation to include Japan and Papua New Guinea, Indonesia's Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said here on Thursday.

Trilateral security arrangements would be developed among Indonesia, Australia, and Japan, and among Indonesia, Australia, and Papua New Guinea, Sjafrie told reporters after meeting his Australian counterpart Richard Marles.

He said the two sides have explored the possibility of developing a defence training facility in Indonesia's eastern province of North Maluku and upgrading its existing infrastructure.

The two countries will also accelerate the implementation of a security agreement signed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Feb. 6, Sjafrie said.
