Indonesia's coking industry shows export diversification

JAKARTA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's coking industry has reported rising production and export diversification so far this year, according to the Coking Business Association (APUKN).

As of May 2025, Indonesia had exported around 2.5 million tons of coke, a key component in steel production, to the global market, the APUKN said.

This marked a 62 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

"This export growth demonstrates the resilience of the national coke industry in facing international market challenges, including trade policy barriers and price pressures," APUKN Chairman Elias Ginting said in a statement.

India, Indonesia's primary export destination, absorbed approximately 2.6 million tons, or 47 percent, of total coke exports last year. However, its share has declined to just 21 percent so far this year, as Indonesia continues to diversify its export markets. New destinations now include Brazil, Belgium, Vietnam, Italy and Trkiye.

In 2024, Indonesia's total coke exports reached 5.56 million tons, placing the country as the third-largest coke exporter in the world, according to the APUKN.
